# Lookout Mountain Point Park

A unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park located on Lookout Mountain. The site of the Civil War battle commonly referred to as "The Battle Above the Clouds." The visitor center houses a 33' by 13' mural painted by James Walker, an eyewitness to the battle, and has several short audio-visual presentations about the painting and battles for Chattanooga.

During my road trip a few years back I got the opportunity to visit point park, which is atop Lookout Mountain. If you have never been here, it has views of all of Chattanooga and the surrounding areas. 

This was used by the south during the civil war to help prevent the Union army from entering the deep south. By have control of the high ground the south was able to fire cannons upon the advancing Union army, injuring and killing them, thus slowing their approach. 

The Union was able to flank the confederate forces thus freeing up the siege they had of the Union forces in Chattanooga. This also led to the Union to be able to drive deep into the south. Helping lead to the Union winning the war.
