13 years ago I left my father's place with a pup. How my father wound up with pups is a whole other story, let us just say people suck. So that day I brought home a scrawny little pup, never knowing how big of a part of my life he would become.

For 13 years Booker was by my side. He was well trained, never needing a leash, loved to play fetch, and most of all loved his treats. He was there through jobs, relationships, moves, good times and bad. Always helping to ease the load as we traveled through this world together.

He knew exactly when to come and aid me when I felt down or lost. He knew when to look at those treats ever so subtly so that people would give him one. He so easily made friends, and loved everyone he met, especially those offering treats.

While unexpected this what not a complete surprise. Booker was diagnosed with cancer back in February, and we had been going through treatments doing everything we could to help extend his life and maintain his quality of life. Finally at 1:30am on May 24th it all must have become too much and he laid down one last time. I was by his side petting him, talking to him, but it was over so quickly. I am thankful he did not suffer and I was able to be there for him in his final moments. With all my traveling and work my greatest fear was he would go through this alone.

"Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened."

Anatole France

Today I lost a piece of one's soul.

The Bommarito family is very sad to hear this. We are fortunate to have had Booker and his Whitey in our lives. He will be missed.

Hey hon, so sorry. I lost 3 of my Danes last fall. My heart aches. It's hard to lose the one that gave unconditional love.
